Quietly responding to people in need
Recently our Executive Director was having a business lunch at a local restaurant. He placed his business card on the table for his colleague. The waiter, upon seeing the card, said, "Oh, I know that place. You saved my life." He proceeded to tell him that years ago his mother had brought him for counseling when his parents separated, and, believing that his life was falling apart, he was feeling suicidal and overwhelmed with a sense of guilt.
He explained that he received counseling from the agency for about six months, during which he learned to deal with his guilt and anger. His suicidal thoughts dissipated, and he began to move back into the social circles he had frequented. Although his parents did end up divorcing, he was helped to maintain a relationship with each parent.
The young man said that he was pursuing a degree in accounting while working part time. He attributed the strong focus he now has to the help he got from FCS during a time in his life when he saw no future for himself.
